'We want young people from all backgrounds to be able to compete on equal terms for admission to universities, including Oxford. Both Oxford and Cambridge have been doing more recently to get the message to bright state pupils that they should apply...

'You are right to raise this issue. Enabling every young person to use their talents and fulfil their potential is vital for all our futures. I hope you will continue your own efforts with the spirit shown in your letter'
