Learndirect Scotland, or Sufi, the empire of Frank Pignatelli, has been bombarding television viewers with adverts featuring an inept DIY enthusiast whose staircase collapses.

This brought back memoies for the cognoscenti. Pignatelli is a self-confessed DIY freak whose eyes used to light up when being shown round workshops in colleges during his days as education director in Strathclyde.
