What I'm reading

The Noble House

By James Clavell

James Clavell wrote Shogun. I love the way he builds up characters throughout his stories, and the way he tells a story. The Noble House is one of those books that, once you start reading, you can't put down. You start reading, then you look up again and two hours have gone by. It is quite good for switching off, which is much needed at times.

The book I loved as a child

The Dandy comics

I mainly read comics as a child. I really enjoyed the humour in them. A lot of my friends used to read them, and we would go into school and talk about the different things we had enjoyed. My favourite character was Desperate Dan in the Dandy. I loved his larger-than-life character, the way he went around eating lots of pies. I come from Liverpool, so pie was a big part of our diet.

Read this before you die

Wuthering Heights

By Emily Bronte

This is a great story. I first read it when I was about 16 years old, and I have read it three or four times since. I love the development of the relationship between Heathcliff and Cathy, and how that goes right the way through their lives. It is a really solid book: the language, the descriptions, the characters. It is a must-read.
