As a former inspector and long-standing critic of the Ofsted inspection regime, I welcome its "new focus" on "what matters most: the quality of teaching and learning, backed by excellent leadership and management, and good discipline and behaviour" ("Ofsted's narrow focus fails to assuage critics", 6 May).

However, what were inspectors doing under previous arrangements if they weren't focusing on these issues?Professor Colin Richards, Spark Bridge, Cumbria.
