NB:Do not back into inspector's car

29th May 1998 at 01:00
INSPECTION week went with a bang for Maggie Moore, head of Hannah Ball first school in High Wycombe, Bucks.

On the penultimate day of the school's Office for Standards in Education inspection, Mrs Moore was reversing out of her parking spot when - crunch - she backed into one of the inspectors' cars.

"I had thanked the inspectors for being so considerate during their inspection and left. The next day was going to be the last day of the inspection and I was very tired," she said.

"I put my Jeep into reverse and backed out and - bang - I had backed into the front headlight of one of the inspectors' cars.

"I couldn't believe it ... the inspector's brand-new Alfa Romeo, the most expensive car in the car park, was damaged. The inspectors heard the bang and asked which car it was," Mrs Moore said.

"The inspector who owned the car was really sweet and only asked 'Is it driveable?' He told me not to worry. Luckily for me, it wasn't the lead inspector's car, and he thought the whole incident was quite amusing. He said 'Go home and have a large gin and don't worry - it won't affect your Ofsted report'."

Unsurprisingly, Mrs Moore found the advice hard to follow. " I couldn't sleep that night, but I needn't have worried, because we received an excellent report."

An Ofsted spokesman said: "Obviously an incident like this would not in any way reflect on a school's report."
