No call for it

We offer an unreserved apology to the National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers over our recent gibe about meeting in a phone box for its Scottish conference (page seven). There is absolutely no way 24 people, give or take a hanger-on, could cram into a single booth.

Numbers would have been greater had the Glasgow delegation tured up but members there are still in the huff about past squabbles.

Undaunted, delegates enjoyed a capital night out before returning to serious matters next day, such as the incompetency of teachers. John Henry, South Lanarkshire, offered a definition: "People who have to go to bed with too much drink."

It was a Friday, after all.
