Northern Ireland Porn-charge teacher pleads guilty

A teacher at one of Ulster's most prestigious grammar schools last week pleaded guilty to downloading thousands of images of children being abused.

Steven Vincent Colton, 52, was charged with making indecent photographs of children between March 2004 and January 2008.

The case is thought to involve 67,000 pictures and 13,000 film images. Craigavon Crown Court heard that five of the 30 charges were of the "highest and most grave" nature.

Mr Colton, who taught politics and history at Sullivan Upper in Holywood, has been on cautionary suspension since he was arrested last year at the school gates and has now handed in his resignation.

Following the arrest, John Stevenson, principal of Sullivan Upper, wrote to parents to confirm that a teacher had been arrested and charged.

He added that the charges he faced did not relate to his work at the school or involve any of the school's pupils.

Mr Colton was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced next month.
