Nothing in the kitty for Chris...

Yesterday was Chris Woodhead's last at OFSTED, and despite the best efforts of the press office to keep the news quiet, it seems that there was no farewell party to reward his six years of loyal service to Her Majesty and her subjects. We can also reveal that the Department for Education and Employment will not be sending flowers or champagne. "It would be inappropriate to spend public money in this wy," according to a spokesperson.

He can also forget a present from the National Union of Teachers - a call to enquire as to what might be sent on Doug McAvoy's behalf prompted gales of laughter down the line.

Even one of his fans, Newcastle University's Professor James Tooley, can only suggest a bound first edition of the 1937 classic How To Win Friends and

Influence People.
