Sparks, the children's medical research facility, benefited from the proceeds when pupils from Windlesham House School, West Sussex, and nine other primaries performed on specially built rock concert-style stages. Fireworks and laser lights were part of the weekend show opened by Princess Michael of Kent.

Ukulele-playing pupils at Childeric Primary in Lewisham, south London, will play a George Formby song in a documentary about the famous musician, presented by comedian Frank Skinner. The children have been learning the ukulele, which is set to overtake the recorder as the favourite first instrument in schools nationally, since September.

An initiative to teach first aid to young children has been launched in Derbyshire by St John Ambulance. Councillor Mike Longden received treatment from North Wingfield Primary pupils Charlotte Robinson and Reece Cutts, helped by training officer Carolyn Pope. Headteacher Dorcas Jennings was assisted by Charlotte, Reece and Kurt Tooby.

Amber Thiara from Bradford Girls' Grammar School, has won the Inspirations Special Award at the education challenge and showcase event organised by North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership and the Yorkshire Air Museum. She is pictured with former winner Emily Cummins.
