"Staying creative" is the theme of a conference organised by the Association for Language Learning and the National Association of Language Advisers at the Martineau Centre, Birmingham, May 20. Courses run by CILT, the National Centre for Languages, include, for primary teachers, a Spanish and a German day, both on May 19 in Liverpool, and a French day in London, May 21. For secondary teachers, French and Spanish improvement days will be held on May 27 and June 17 respectively, in London. Fee per course: pound;60; members pound;50. Expolingua Berlin, the international fair for languages and culture, will be held at Russisches Haus der Wissenschaft und Kultur, Berlin, November 12-14. Seminar topics will include study and work experiences abroad, language learning and teaching.

"Pack an extra language in your luggage" is the theme of the European Day of Languages on September 26, which celebrates linguistic diversity and promotes language learning across Europe. UK events, co-ordinated by CILT, the National Centre for Languages,include a special day incorporating the European Awards for Languages ceremonies and the launch of Languages Work materials. Free resources are available for schools.
