FIGURES from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council show there are 121,000 students, expressed as full-time numbers, attending HE institutions this session - a 0.5 per cent rise. This contrasts with the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service, based on applications by mid-December, showing a drop of 2.3 per cnt on last session.

The Government will issue its response to the full Cubie report on student finance by the spring, ministers told MSPs in last week's Parliamentary debate on their proposals. This would include decisions on childcare support; Cubie recommended a pound;1,000 childcare grant for lone parents.
