Ofsted appoints early-years chief

THE Office for Standards in Education has appointed Maurice Smith as its director of early years. Mr Smith, a former LEA inspector and social worker, has been acting director of the Ofsted department since September when Maggie Smith, his predecessor, stepped down for health and family reasons. David Taylor has become Ofsted's single director of inspection, after fellow director Elizabeth Passmore retired.
