'Chocolate and chicks' (Resources, 15 March)

- I work in secondary education, but the principles are very much the same in spelling even new or complicated words. As a parent with a young child, this has given me some great ideas that I will definitely try out at home. It goes to show that phonics blending can be used in any situation - it just takes a bit of thought and imagination. Instead of drilling children to repeat after you, trick is to make it fun and rewarding. Thank you, Michelle Dredger.

- Thanks ever so much for sharing this! I am currently doing some research on the importance of language and communication and literacy as part of everyday play and have developed some strategies so the basic foundations of letters and sounds and expression and communication skills are enhanced through play. When I read about this kind of thing, I feel more and more enthusiastic about what I do and want to take my research further. Eventually, I hope to develop training for other professionals in early years. Thanks for bringing great learning opportunities to everyday play.

Excellent, Don. I reckon it's the best piece you've ever written.
