Onwards and upwards

Congratulations on two counts to John Mulgrew who quits at Easter as education and social work supremo in East Ayrshire. The arts and enterprise champion, who also headed the 2000 inquiry into modern languages (yes, it's his fault), has been catapulted into the chair of Learning and Teaching Scotland. This requires a few days' presence each week, so no retirement yet for the youthful 65-year-old.

We hear Mulgrew beat off challenges from Michael O'Neill, education director in North Lanarkshire, and Keir Bloomer, the LTS vice-chair and chief executive in Clackmannanshire, both of whom harbour more radical ideas on shaping the future.

It can only be a matter of time before Mulgrew is elevated further. We suppose a seat on the Celtic board is out of the question?
