Jim Campbell's critique of the Cambridge Primary Review's domain on faith and belief as "religious indoctrination" appears to be based on a stereotype of RE which is at least 30 years out of date (Letters, February 27).

Modern RE is inclusive, enquiry-based and reflects the Toledo principles on inquiry into religious and secular world-views, with the aim of promoting greater understanding of, and respect for, different cultures, ethnicities, religions or beliefs. Practitioners teach a model of RE that promotes respect and open-mindedness among other qualities.

Professor Campbell's dismissal of this reality is disappointing, inaccurate and intellectually sloppy. It is high time educationists caught up with modern RE.
