Outdoor - Leaders in their field

RSPB Scotland field teachers, based at Glasgow's Kelvingrove art gallery and museum, have received national recognition for the quality of their outdoor learning work.

The Quality Badge scheme, launched in 2008, is a national accreditation for organisations offering learning outside the classroom experiences for children and young people. The scheme, a partnership between the then Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom, indicates to teachers and other education providers the high standards of teaching, learning and health and safety provided by participants.

Its report on the Living Classroom initiative at Kelvingrove stated: "When working in the park, pupils learn a great many facts and encounter many interesting animals, plants and habitats: this helps pupils to go back and to discover wildlife in their own local area."

Jenifer MacCaluim, who heads the RSPB field teaching team based at the Glasgow park, said: "Kelvingrove Park is a great place to see wildlife. A wide variety of plants and animals live in the park and along the River Kelvin, and this hands-on learning supports and extends the children's work in the classroom."
