Case H had 16 offences registered against him before being committed to Borstal at the age of 20. His sad history began with stealing four times before he was sent to an industrial school at the age of 11. It seems as if it had been then too late to rescue him, and nine terms of imprisonment ranging from a year to a day have been his fate since. It is impossible to resist the belief that 100 years hence our descendants will regard our unscientific and haphazard methods of dealing with some of our difficult cases today with the same horror as we of this generation read of the terrible treatment meted out to little boys and girls in the earlier decades of the 19th century.

How many British Ambassadors were educated at public schools? How many at state grammar schools? Mr George Thomas, MP, asked these questions in Parliament on Monday in what was presumably an attempt to discover snobbish prejudices in the Foreign Office. Considering that most ambassadors must be over 50, and have been educated in an age when the privileges of education were much more closely reserved, it was hardly surprising that only a small minority came from grammar and direct-grant schools.
