Pedants beware pedants I;Letter;Opinion

9th July 1999 at 01:00
IN RESPONSE to Michael J Smith (The plurality of pedantry, TES Letters, July 2) I certainly regard myself as a supporter of Geoff Barton's "Speech packs a punch" (Friday Magazine, TES, June 11) , and beg Mr Smith to look again at collective nouns, for example, herd, flock, swarm, committee.

Media, too, is a collective noun and as such becomes an "it" rather than "them".

A simple mistake to make, but beware all ye pedants to check your rules first.
