Education minister Brian Wilson has to be careful where he is seen these days. After all what he used to consider a perfectly normal activity - to wit, crossing the Minch between Stornoway and Ullapool - is now elevated to the Herald's esteemed diary column.

More seriously, last week he found himself in the company of Celtic supremo Fergus McCann at a "Scottish youth against bigotry" gathering - a happy chore combining official duties with his position as author of the club's official history. Since anyone who appears beside McCann at a press event is usually on his way out or his way in, Wilson felt obliged to say: "Don't worry, I'm not the new manager."
