Penelope Penney, head of Haberdashers' Aske's Girls School, Elstree, is the new president of the Girls' Schools Association.

Barbara Kahan, retiring chair of the National Children's Bureau, has been appointed vice president of the charity.

Marilyn Kinnon, head of Monken Hadley Primary School, Barnet, Hertfordshire, will become head of St Clement Danes Primary School, Covent Garden, London WC2 in January.

Dr Douglas Munro, who has held senior positions in companies such as ICI, Mars, Cadbury Schweppes and Beecham, has been appointed director for external relations of the City Technology Colleges Trust. He succeeds John Taylor who has moved to the BBC to present his own series on legal matters.

Evelyn Carter, co-director of Friends for the Young Deaf People Trust, has been awarded an honorary OBE in recognition of her training and education work with people with hearing difficulties.

Lara Crooks, a deaf student who gained a BTEC National Diploma in science at Harrogate College and plans to become a teacher, received the Business and Technology Education Council's Student of the Year award from the Secretary of State for Education, Gillian Shephard, on December 6.

Edinburgh University has awarded an honorary doctorate in veterinary medicine and surgery to Sir David Attenborough, the naturalist and broadcaster.
