Diana Warwick of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy has been appointed chief executive of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals in succession to Tom Burgner who is retiring. She was general secretary of the Association of University Teachers from 1983 to 1992.

Jasbinder Barn, a curriculum parental support assistant at Rosebank Primary School, Leeds, is one of the first group of students to gain a PGCE through the Open University in Leeds. She was funded by Campaign 300, a Leeds education department project to recruit more black teachers into local schools.

Dr Frances Dow has been appointed to the new post of assistant principal at Edinburgh University. She is currently vice-provost of the faculty of arts, divinity and music and a senior lecturer in history.
