Dr Vaneeta-marie D'Andrea, director of educational development at Roehampton Institute London, is the first academic in Britain to win the American Sociological Association's Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award.

David Grigg, formerly deputy head of Kingsmeadow Comprehensive, Gateshead, has been appointed head of Stanley Comprehensive, Co Durham, upon the retirement of Cecil Johnson after 25 years in the post.

Maureen Bradley, head of St Joseph's School, Lincoln, has been appointed head of Lincoln Minster School, which will open in September when the Cathedral and St Joseph's Schools are merged. Clive Rickart, head of Oswestry Junior School, will become head of Lincoln Minster Preparatory School following the retirement of Canon Robert Western, head of the Cathedral School.

Ulster University has awarded the following honorary degrees: Master in Education to Roisin Skeffington, who teaches children with special needs at St Peter's Primary School, Belfast; Master of Arts to Eric Boyd, North Eastern Education and Library Board's music service, Ballymoney; MEd to Doreen Frazer, vice principal, Fermanagh College of Further Education; Doctor of Science to Dr Rajamal Devadas, Avinashilingham Institute for Home Science and Higher Education, India; Master of Fine Arts to Denise Farren, Ulster Museum; MEd to Carmel Gallaher, Northern Ireland Curriculum Council; and MSc to Dr Nicholas Todd, a teacher in Belfast.
