Dr Ian Birnbaum, assistant director of education and chief inspector for Sutton, will be promoted to the post of director of education on October 2.

Peter Lawley, previously deputy head at Sidney Stringer Community Technology College, Coventry, is now associate director of the Centre for the Study of Comprehensive Schools based in Northampton.

Richard Dimbleby, formerly principal of Strode College, Street, Somerset, became principal and chief executive of The Bournemouth and Poole College of Further Education upon the retirement of Dr Alan Chitty.

Dr Marilyn Butler, rector of Exeter College, Oxford, has replaced the late Lady Johnston as president of the Girls' Public Day School Trust.

Hugh Davies Jones, head of St Andrew's School, Eastbourne, has begun his second three-year term as chairman of the Incorporated Association of Preparatory Schools.
