Paul Roberts, currently deputy director of education at Nottinghamshire Council, will become education director for Nottingham when it becomes a unitary authority in April 1998.

The London Institute has awarded honorary fellowships to: John Galliano, Dior's head of design and a graduate of Central Saint Martins; and Anish Kapoor, sculptor and graduate of Chelsea College of Art and Design. Professor William Callaway, former head of London College of Fashion, and Professor John McKenzie, former rector of the London Institute, have been appointed emeritus professors.

Recipients of honorary degrees at Edinburgh University include: Sir David Steel, president of Liberal International and former leader of the Liberal party (doctor of laws); Dame Bridget Ogilvie, Wellcome Trust (doctor honoris causa); and Dr Jane Goodall, director, Jane Goodall Institute for Wildlife Research, Education and Conservation (doctor of veterinary medicine and surgery).
