Graham Talbot, acting chief education officer for Bury, becomes director of education for Halton on September 1 in the borough council's run-up to unitary status.

Toni Griffiths, European developmentpress officer at the London Institute of Education, has been appointed dean of new initiatives from July 1 in succession to Professor Michael Barber.

Malcolm Peckham, group director of student services for Croydon, will become director of education for Windsor and Maidenhead in September.

Tim Smith, vice-principal of Exeter College, is taking over as principal, following the retirement due to ill-health of Dr John Capey.

Chris Smyth, general manager of Direct Line Insurance, Leeds, has been appointed chairman of Leeds Careers Guidance. He succeeds John Crowther, who is now chief executive of the Lawn Tennis Association.
