The Economic and Social Research Council has appointed new members to serve from August 1 to July 31, 1999: David Greenaway, professor of economics and pro-vice-chancellor of Nottingham University; Professor Michael Gibbons, secretary general of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and former dean of the graduate school and director of the science policy research unit, Sussex University; Hazel Genn, professor of socio-legal studies, University College, London; and Keith Brandon, commercial director of Tesco Stores, responsible for their retail business in the Czech and Slovak Republics.

Neil McCormick, regius professor of public law and vice-principal of Edinburgh University, and Barbara Beckett, group retail marketing director of the British Airport Authority, have been re-appointed for a further two years.

Alex McDiarmid, a chartered engineer working as a consultant within the world energy industry, has been appointed chairman of Quinco Ltd, the company set up to manage a five-year campaign to heighten public awareness of the role of engineers and engineering.
