PICTURES IN THE DARK. By Gillian Cross. Puffin. pound;4.99.

Charlie is obsessed with photography, and this many-layered narrative takes that as its starting point.

The story follows Charlie's involvement with Peter, a bullied younger boy who is not what he seems. It is also about the ordinary worlds of home and school colliding with the supernatural.

The characters are well drawn ,and the river is so real you can almost smell it, but it is Peter's plight which moves us, and haunts us.
