Play is stepping stone to award

ACTOR, writer and teacher Mike Kenny was this week announced as the first winner of the Writers' Award for Children's Theatre by the Arts Council of England. Mr Kenny, from Leeds, was chosen for the prestigious pound;6,000 prize for Stepping Stones, a play desgned for young people with special educational needs and inspired by Basho, a 17th-century writer of haiku, Japanese poetry. The award is made for the play judged to stimulate the imagination and demonstrate innovative use of language or form.
