We note from the examination authorities that "presentations for the Leaving Certificate Examination increased dramatically, as did the failure rate.

"The number of presentations was also artifically increased by the fact that, since schools used examination statistics to enhance their reputatios, they re-presented pupils year after year, even in subjects which they had already passed."

We are grateful to the old Scottish Examination Board's Short History of National School Certificates in Scotland for exposing this regrettable state of affairs - at the turn of last century.
