* Nicholas Tate ("English play a very peculiar race game", TES, July 29) seems not to understand what racism is or how it operates and so misses the reason for collecting ethnic data.

The purpose of monitoring is to identify discrepancies between groups that may be due to racial disadvantage or discrimination. These can then be analysed and steps taken to rectify any discrimination. Monitoring data on nationality alone would only reveal part of the picture.
