No connection with the previous item really, but readers will surely have noticed that the Rosemary Conley diet and fitness clubs are conducting a post-new year advertising blitz in the Glasgow area to help good folk fight the flab.

In among the usual mix of church hall venues are to be found the gym of Hutcheson's Grammar and the hall of St Aloysius' College recreation club at Millerston - but there's not a single state school venue listed.

As one heidie put it: "They haven't chosen a let with us. Maybe they think the private schools are more upmarket, or perhaps it's because private schools have been good at taking pounds off parents for years."
