Pounds 1m bill for flood damage

Schools and other education properties accounted for 130 out of the 208 Central Region sites which suffered flood damage during the Christmas holiday period.

Nearly half of the cost of property damage totalling Pounds 873,000 was accounted for by just four schools. Graeme High, Denny primary, St Ninian's primary and Sacred Heart primary are all in the Falkirk-Denny area which was hit by a drop in gas pressure.

The council, which appears to be the only local authority in Scotland to be insured against flood damage, is to ask the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities to ascertain how much damage was attributable to gas supply problems.

The council estimates total repair costs to education properties at Pounds 723,000. The figure rises to Pounds 953,000 when other costs such as equipment, materials and cleaning are added.
