The power of politics

A new book offering unique insights into the post-devolution world of UK politics has just been published.

Modern UK Politics aims to support teachers as they take their pupils through the political section of the Higher modern studies course.

The book covers everything from the powers of the Scottish Parliament and the changes it has made, to different electoral systems and voting behaviour. It is part of a multimedia package with learning activities and podcasts (see websites).

Author John McTaggart, a modern studies teacher who teaches part-time at Boroughmuir High in Edinburgh, says: "The book is just one part of a wider set of resources. These days there is more than one way to learn, and I think teachers have to acknowledge that."

Through the website, he also aims to ensure his book never grows old: "Books become out of date but through the website I will be keeping it current."

Former First Minister Jack McConnell launched Modern UK Politics last week at the Scottish Parliament.

Mr McTaggart had hoped to have the book on the shelves last year but was foiled by what he calls "the Gordon Brown moment". He explains: "It was ready to go in October, but then Gordon Brown started humming and hawing about an election. Everything had to be put on hold in case the book had to be rewritten."
