Expelled . for dressing as a girl


A schoolboy claimed he was sent home from class for dressing as a girl. Sixth-former Jamie Love, 17, was left humiliated and in tears after he arrived wearing tights, shorts, hair extensions and make-up - only to be ordered to leave. His school, Govan High in Glasgow, said he was expelled because of his lack of commitment to education, rather than his style of dress.

Fears asthmatic schoolchildren denied inhalers


Thousands of children in Scotland are struggling to access life-saving medicine because of needless red tape, the charity Asthma UK Scotland has warned. A survey of youngsters aged 5-18 with the condition revealed that more than two-thirds had suffered a potentially deadly attack at school, yet many struggled to access an inhaler due to regulations classing the devices as prescription-only medicines.

Fashion learning curve


It is a world that has been inhabited by stick-thin models and clothes designed to suit their frames for too long. Now, one of the country's top fashion schools has taken a big step to rectify "size zero" bias. Edinburgh College of Art students have become the first in the UK to use bigger mannequins, from size 14-20.

App launched to aid autistic children


An iPad app has been created to help autistic children as young as 18 months develop their social skills. FindMe was designed at Edinburgh University, working with Interface3, a computer games company. It is hoped the game will help children learn to empathise with others, something people with autism find difficult, before they reach school.

Ofsted `satisfactory' rating to be scrapped


The Ofsted rating of "satisfactory" for schools - widely regarded as a euphemism for a poor school - is to be scrapped, the new chief inspector of schools, Sir Michael Wilshaw, will propose. Schools that fail to provide a good standard of education will be graded "requires improvement", and no school will be allowed to stay in this category for more than three years.
