The QCA's Reading Differences project, to be launched on March 10 with a conference at the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education, aims to promote greater use in schools of books by authors from around the world. How about the first Finnish picture book to be translated since the Moomins? Tundra Mouse Mountain by Riitta Jalonen, illustrated by Kristina Louhi and translated by JM Ledgard, has a meaty text for eight-year-olds and above about a mother and daughter's journey to the Arctic. It's coming later this term from Winged Chariot Press, launched last year to publish European picture books in translation plus online resources (at www.winged including audio files of the stories being read in the original language.
