Raising the alarm

5th June 2009 at 01:00

The Westminster Government is to investigate why only 400 of the UK's 32,000 schools have sprinklers. A recent article in The TES Magazine reported that 90,000 pupils are affected by arson each year, and an average of 20 schools are damaged or destroyed by deliberate fires each week at an annual cost of Pounds 58 million. The number of Scottish schools set on fire rose by 20 per cent between 1998 and 2007 (TESS last week).
