Recruitment to graduate teacher training courses is down

Recruitment to graduate teacher training courses is down on last year, for the second month in succession. Latest official figures show applications for secondary courses are down nearly 15 per cent compared to January 2000, and don nearly 17 per cent in primary.

Even usually popular subjects, such as English and history, are struggling to find takers, with applications running at 16.7 and 25.6 per cent below last year's levels respectively.
