15th January 2010 at 00:00

What is it?

The maths bus is a tabletop activity for use in lessons on addition and subtraction for numbers from one to 10.

How can it be used?

This colourful resource can be printed in A4 or larger formats and used to teach pupils about addition and subtraction, and also used as a classroom display.

Divide the class into teams and give each a set of sheets with the images of the bus and the children who will make up the passengers. See how many different sums they can create. The larger printed format can be displayed in the maths area of the classroom once it has been filled with the pictures.

You could refer to the maths bus each day at the beginning of maths lessons as a fun starter activity.

Why is it successful?

The maths bus is successful because it is a visual and stimulating activity that can engage pupils and get them thinking about simple maths problems.
