Music to the ears

The National Association of Music Educators has published a book on how to get more out of pupils during lessons. Whose Music Education Is It?: the role of the student voice, encourages pupils to mould the curriculum and direct their own learning. Nature takes centre stage

Professor Steve Jones, new president of the Association for Science Education, will deliver the keynote address at its annual conference next year. Professor Jones, formerly head of genetics, environment and evolution at University College London, will speak on Nature, Nurture or Neither: The View From the Genes, at the conference in Reading, which runs from January 5 to 8.

CITIZENSHIP

This looks at the issues of gender inequality in the developing world and is aimed at key stage 3 pupils.

Aims: pupils will

- explore personal experiences;

- explore how and why some groups experience inequality.

Getting started

Print off the birth congratulations cards from the link below and put them on the classroom walls. Divide the class by gender. Point out the cards on the walls and discuss the images associated with each gender. What does this suggest about attitudes to boys and girls from birth?

Ask the class how their own families celebrate a birth. Discuss differences in attitudes and expectations for boys and girls.

Taking it further

Discuss what jobs pupils hope to do and whether they carry a gender bias. Ask the pupils to complete the activity sheet, writing a sentence on health, education and work in Britain and the developing world.

MATHS

This looks at angles and symmetry and is aimed at key stage 4 pupils.

Aims: pupils will

- understand basic angle geometry;

- understand line and rotational symmetry.

Getting started

Show the pupils the angles on the link below and ask them to measure them with a protractor. Ask them to draw the following angles (in degrees): 22, 120, 90, 45, 180, 62. Show them the triangles on the link below and ask them to measure the angles and add them up. What can they conclude about triangles? Give them pictures of the quadrilaterals and ask them to measure the interior angles and find the sum. Show them the triangle on the grid. What is the name of that type of triangle?

Taking it further

Ask the pupils to copy each shape and mark all lines of symmetry and state the order of rotational symmetry. Give them pictures of the half-drawn shapes and get them to complete each one so it has line symmetry but no rotational symmetry, then rotational symmetry but no line symmetry, and finally so it has both rotational and line symmetry.

HISTORY

This looks at suffragettes and is aimed at key stage 3 pupils and also links to citizenship studies.

Aims: pupils will

- analyse and explain reasons for, and results of, historical events;

- analyse the significance of people and events in their historical context;

- evaluate historical sources.

Getting started

Explain how working men gained the vote in the 19th century. Hold a mock election but exclude the girls. Ask them how exclusion made them feel. Introduce the suffragettes and the key players.

Taking it further

Tell the class that they will all play the part of suffragettes. Divide them into groups and give them information on the methods the suffragettes used (available on the link below). Ask them to discuss the pros and cons of each tactic. Ask them to prepare their own campaign using the tactics they feel will get the best results.
