Assistant head, Brookhill Leys Primary and Nursery School, Eastwood, Nottingham.
Suzal became assistant head of Brookhill in 2006, when the infant and junior schools amalgamated; the merged school now has 350 pupils. Suzal leads the foundation unit, overseeing a team of key stage 1 teachers and teaching assistants.
Since joining the leadership team three years ago, her support has been integral to raising standards. Suzal was responsible for the school's successful implementation of the early-years foundation stage framework.
She is highly respected among staff - her calming and caring approach have been noted as one of her key qualities. Following the amalgamation of the infant and junior schools, staff have commended Suzal for helping members of staff to become a single, united body with a shared vision for the school. She strongly believes that it should be the hub of the community and is committed to realising this vision.
In addition to her warm relationships with pupils, Suzal is popular with parents, who feel happy dropping their children at school knowing that she is there to offer support and guidance. She cares about every child as an individual and knows what each one needs to achieve at every stage of their school experience.
Jacquie Sainsbury, head, who says: "Suzal could make an amazing head and I think she will take the next step and complete the NPQH in the next couple of years. She is modest and humble, which allows her to channel all her energy into teaching. She is an invaluable member of the team."
