School status strike

23rd January 2009 at 00:00

Teachers are due to strike at five Croydon schools over plans to merge three into an academy and make the others trust schools.

Dave Harvey, Croydon NUT secretary, said 139 members were expected to walk out from Ashburton Infant, Ashburton Junior, Ashburton High, Addington High and Westwood High on January 27. The union wants the council to ballot parents, staff and governors on plans to change the schools' status. The council said it believed academies tackled entrenched low achievement and was disappointed with the union's decision to strike.
