The report of the Pennington committee on last November's E coli epidemic in central Scotland recommends that all primary and secondary pupils should be trained in food hygiene "wherever possible".
Michael Forsyth, the Scottish Secretary, said the Government would ensure this was implemented along with the other 31 recommendations.
A Scottish Office diet group has recommended a short course on food handling for pupils after the second year of secondary school to promote healthy eating. The Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum expects to be asked to extend the scope of that work.
The group had expressed concern that home economics is optional from the third year and warns: "The lessons learnt in earlier years about practical food preparation can be diminished with the passage of time."
The Pennington report backs "appropriate emphasis to food safety in teaching in schools, in out-of-school classes and in other courses".
