Wendy Alexander, now that she is a young(ish) mum, has found a new cause on which to vent her customary evangelical fervour, as we reported last week - food for the under-fives.

The former Lifelong Learning Minister confessed that it is only now, as a mother of twins, that she has discovered the joys of the blender to mash the things you need to mash when you are the mother of twins - food, we think.

Mrs Ashcroft also revealed that her only culinary breakthrough when she was a pupil was to bake a Victoria sponge - precise as ever. She has never baked another since.

Now if only she had begun as a precocious three or four year old. Bring me a child at the age of ...
