Pupils at Mereway Middle School, Northampton, helped launch the Government White Paper on overseas aid with a video-conference link between Tony Blair and international development secretary Clare Short in Downing Street and schools in India and South Africa.

The paper pledges to promote sustainable development and schools will play a key role. Ms Short said: "Every child should be educated about development issues so they can influence the shape of the world they will inherit."
