Shorts shrift

As a fat kid and man of some 40 years' standing, I agree with the trainee PE teachers (TES, June 15). I have nothing to be proud of physically and have always preferred watching television to "active" play.

I believe all physical education should be voluntary. All schools should run sports teams but nobody should have to participate, thus ensuring the greatest happiness of the greatest number.

And PE teachers and pupils alike should have the right to wear shorts or anything else. My reply to pompous talk about a "professional image" is that professional sportsmen usually wear them. If it's good enough for Becks and Rooney...
