There is potential confusion for educational historians in a new book called The Side School. Before the 1872 Act side schools were additional schools founded by heritors in a large parish where children had too far to travel to the main school.
But the subject of this study is a school at Side, which happens to be a village near Kilmacolm. As David Roe, the author, points out Side was not a side school since it was funded by subscription, not by local taxes.
All clear? Then you can obtain the Side story from 1796 until the school closed in 1951 by contacting Roe at Syde, Old Greenock Road, Kilmacolm PA13 4TG (price Pounds 7.20 plus 60p postage).
