A new government-backed programme will help young children struggling with maths. A similar initiative already exists to help pupils with literacy. Every Child Counts scheme will begin in six local authorities and will be modified following the review of primary maths carried out by the Advisory Committee on Mathematics Education. The government has pledged that 30,000 children a year will benefit from the scheme by 2011.
