Small wonder professional status is low

4th May 2012 at 01:00

Regarding your article "Without all due respect" (TES, 20 April), the reason teachers are held in such low esteem is because they are thick. Watch teachers on TV quiz shows - their ignorance is astounding. My neighbour is a deputy head, yet didn't know there were general elections in 2005 and 2010 and thinks John Prescott is a member of the Lib Dems. She does not know her times tables, yet is in charge of the maths curriculum at her school.

She is not an isolated example. Teachers may well have more qualifications today, but they most certainly are not educated.
