Teachers tempted to despair about the career aspirations of today's children should think again. A survey of 1,700 children by the schools career service showed that teaching was the fifth most popular career choice for children.

It came behind acting, professional sports such as football, golf and tennis, the legal profession and accountancy.

The survey predicted that if the children's ambitions were realised there would be a lack of builders and agricultural workers.
