Source of new staff lies untapped;Letter

No wonder Claire Maxwell has not found a place on the Graduate Teacher Programme (Letters, TES, May 8). It is governing bodies, not the education authorities she telephoned, which take on GTP trainees.

Even so, Claire is right to be pessimistic. The Teacher Training Agency has a website on which schools may advertise vacancies suitable for GTP trainees, but I believe only one such advertisement has so far appeared on it.

The training agency has concentrated on increasing the supply of prospective teachers. But in the one area where supply outstrips demand, it has done nothing.
